after spending several days gathering items to complete my duffel, such as a plastic set of utensils and dinnerware, a collapsible 6-shelf hanger, and a steel carabiner among other things, I have somewhat settled into the idea that I will be leaving shortly to move to Sacramento and from there travel to who knows where for who knows how long.
I have received interesting reactions to my AmeriCorps commitment. people have shared with me looks of pity, words of encouragement, as well as commendations for devoting time to the service of others. I've heard everything from "I would never ever have decided to do that, I don't know how you're going to do it" to "wow, that's a big job, I bow down to you" to "well, thank you for your service" (the latter of which caught me off guard and resulted in my response: 'thanks, you too!' ...perhaps I should think of a better last minute response for the next time someone thanks me for serving our country...)
it's been interesting preparing for this next bit of time in my life and as of now, I don't know whether I am in fact crazy for agreeing to live out of a used military duffel for several months or am exactly where I'm supposed to be as a recent college graduate. nevertheless, I plan to approach the next nine months with an open mind, a willing spirit, and a tightly stuffed duffel.
stay tuned..
